Debating Can Be Learned
The Foundation Discussiëren Kun Je Leren (Debating Can Be
Learned) develops the communicative and social-emotional skills of
elementary school students through language classes. In these
classes, students are encouraged to develop a tolerant attitude
towards each other and each other's cultures. In 2008 Kennedy
Van der Laan gave financial support to the pilot of this Foundation
in twelve elementary schools. This pilot was completed on 9 June
2008 with a special end event; the first "Amsterdam Primary
Schools Debating Battle" with the theme "the
multicultural city". In the Debating Battle, 30 children from
grades 7 and 8 of elementary schools competed for the title of
'Debating Hero 2008'. On 22 June 2009, the second
elementary schools' Debating Battle was held.
