Annual Four Day Evening Walk Event Westerpark
In the spring of 2011, the sixth Annual Four Day Evening Walk
Event (Avond4daagse) Westerpark will be held. Six years ago, the
initiative for a four day evening walk event in the Westerpark
district was made by a group of parents of a local elementary
school, who did not want to bring their children to other districts
every year. Why not organize a four day evening walk event in their
own district? They took the initiative, managed to make the Urban
District Council enthusiastic and the four day evening walk event
was a big success in the district from the start. In 2010, 1,886
registered children participated in the walk, followed by a
few thousand parents.
The Four Day Evening Walk Event in the Westerpark district is
about more than getting youth into motion. It is a classic example
of social participation: all kinds of local residents participate,
young and old, people from ethnic minorities and native Dutch,
ardent walkers and disabled persons. A small army of volunteers
ensures that everything goes smoothly: they plot the routes,
regulate traffic, handle the registration, check the cards, drive
the sag wagon and do all kinds of other organizational things.
Students do their non-profit traineeships here.
Also the local entrepreneurs – who are sponsoring the event –
are involved every year round.
The result is a unique four day evening walk event with a great
atmosphere, in which not even pouring rain can spoil the fun.
Kennedy Van der Laan is one of the local entrepreneurs that is
well disposed towards the four day evening walk event Westerpark
2011 and sponsors it with all its heart.
